Make-A-Wish Initiative Enquiry
An enquiry from Delanwy Arthur
Fund Raising Manager
Make-A-Wish® UK grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, it has a huge impact on them and their whole family.
A wish can transform the life of a seriously ill child and provide precious memories for them and their family to treasure forever – whatever the future may hold.
We currently have 3 fundraising initiatives that I would love to get some of the beaver, cub and scout groups in Wales involved in and to give each group the opportunity to take part.
The initiatives that I would like the beaver, cub and scout groups to have the opportunity of taking part in are:
Magic Miles is a sponsored run, jog, skip, hop, or walk designed for children of all ages to raise much-needed funds.
Wear What You Wish What does each beaver, cub and scout wish to be when they grow up? A rock star? A police officer? An astronaut? whatever they wish to be – Wear What You Wish is their chance to get dressed up and raise funds to grant the wishes of seriously ill children.
Bake-A-Wish which invites people or groups to hold a bake sale, afternoon tea, bake-off or cookie decorating competition, the funds from which will help some very special children.
You can find out more about each initiative by clicking the following link:
Magic Miles
Wear What you Wish
Bake a Wish
Each initiative is totally different so there is a great chance that one of the three will appeal to many of the groups in Wales and I would be hugely grateful if you were able to help me tell all of the groups as I would love to get them all involved.
All a group needs to do to take part in one of the activities is to register on one of the above links and I, or my colleague Lucy who covers North Wales, will get in touch with them to offer our support and any fundraising materials that they might need.

A message from Steve DC
March 1st 2015 marks the opening of a new page in the life of Newport Scout District.
I am very pleased to be accepting the appointment of District Commissioner of a successful body of Scouting people. Together with my Deputy, Mrs Andrea Fairless, it is the intention to build on the successes that Scouting in Newport has enjoyed in the past.
We bring considerable experience to the roles and will use this to insure all levels within the District gain as much help and support, as is available, in order to carry out their functions thus helping to provide greater opportunities to our young membership.
Undoubtedly there will be times when changes maybe introduced, but it is anticipated that these will be implemented with your full knowledge and support.
I would ask you all to show your appreciation to Dave (Polly) Pollard, for “holding the fort” over the last year or so, by making a maximum effort to insure a full turn-out at this year`s St George`s Day Parade. In the meantime Polly, on behalf of Scouting in Newport, thank you very much for all your contributions.
In addition there is the forthcoming Portcullis Camp in May which will be Gwent wide. This will provide an opportunity for us all to join with our peers and partake in the “Jamboree experience.” There will be a wide array of activities available. This will also act as a rare opportunity for all Sections, in all Groups in Newport to camp together. Thus helping to give the help and support to everybody to gain that great “outdoor experience.”
I am looking forward to working with you all.
