THE OLDEST FETE IN MALPAS

On a rain threaten Saturday in September the 25th held Malpas oldest fete. The day starts nice and early, the team of supporters start to turn up and the area is transformed from a quiet area of Newport into the blast that makes a scout fete special.

Made up of ‘white elephant ‘, glass ware, toys books, DVD’s, bottles, hot dogs, light refreshment, coconuts, fishing, games of skill and luck, plus a tins store. There was something for all the family. At 14:00 we opened the fete to the good people of Malpas , many old supporters waiting for the doors to open and the fun to begin.

The afternoon progresses with coconuts won and hotdogs eaten. It’s not as busy as most years,  the much awaited raffle takes place with many winning the top quality prizes all of which have been donated by the parents and residents of Malpas.  We would like to thank Malpas Unionist Club and Domino Pizzas for their very generous donations.

Now the team turns its efforts to return the Church and Scout halls back to normal and the area returns to the quiet setting that is Llanover Close.
Another successful fete so a very BIG THANK YOU to everyone who worked so hard before and during the day. Thanks from all the Committee and unformed adults, we can’t do it with you.

NEWPORT FISHING COMPETITION 2011

It’s September so it must be Saturday fishing competition, with over 24 cubs and scouts all keen to do their best, many having the support from parents, grandparents and one sister even had her boy friends support her brother,  who is a cub.

Weather started with heavy rain which kept the fish and the ducks happy, but the scouts all kept bringing the fish home to try and fill the keep nets. During the day the weather did improve to be sunny and hot. After some 4 hours of hard work it was rods down and the big job of weighing the fish.
As you can see this year all records were broken, with one catch of over 35lb!

But all the scouts/cubs were all winners by taking part, in the process developing a skill which will bring them many hours of enjoyment in the future.

First place went to the Air scouts, 2nd and 3rd to 1st Caerleon and Explorers. Many thanks go to Glyn and Gareth for the time they put into organising the event each year and thanks also to the Newport Angling Association who allow the scouts the use of the lakes.

90 years of the Royal British Legion

25th Air Scouts were at St Woolos for the thanks giving service and taking a small part in the preceedings, enjoying the service were many of Gwents top brass. Thanks to everyone on a job well done and ensuring  Newport Scouting is part of Newport’s wider city events.

Climbing permit trainning for Adult Leaders

After a successful climbing permit assessment evening for Network members earlier in the year with our Area Assessor, I'm doing some initial planning for a similar event for adult leaders. To attend, you'll already be familiar with the relevant eqipment and knots, and will need to be able to belay competently. During the evening you'd have the opportunity to brush up the simple problem solving skills necessary to gain a permit. The venue will probably be Boulders in Cardiff, and the cost would be the entrance fee for the centre (currently £8), plus a small fuel contribution for the assessor. Success would lead to a permit for climbing (not abseiling) on in-situ ropes - this would cover you for taking young people to for example Boulders, and the YMCA in Newport (there is also a possibility of extension to cover Islwyn Scout Parc, depending on prior experience). If you weren't quite ready you'd be told what areas you needed to practice. If you would like to be included in the plans for this, please let me know so that I can co-ordinate suitable dates.
