The DCs New year message

At this time many of us will be looking back over the last 12 months remembering the highs and lows that made up our year. I hope that you have many happy memories of your Scouting year in 2014. Those activities which have engaged the Scouts and involved many of the membership, times when the weather and conditions may have been testing but then a fun and positive scouting activity may have made us recall stories of activities in other past times when it was bigger, wetter and colder but still great fun!

Our District Scouting family has seen changes when some of our membership have "gone home" much earlier than any of us would have wished for but being a family we have given and continue to give support to others in the family, which I know really does help during those dark times.

Going forward the District and the Association are entering into a new mind set with Scouting building on its proud history of offering Scouting to all. We are about to go fully IT. Doing away with the paper files we have completed and collected (and hopefully reduced?) The membership will be able to see their own records and pay their all-important membership directly to HQ. I hope the District will be able to continue to support those who may not have their own IT equipment at this time.
It takes me back to the time when Cub Leaders would have a weekly inspection which would include money for the phone box and we all had to know how to use and know where our local public phone box was just in case of an emergency. Today how many of the younger membership would not know where, how and why?  How did we cope?

I know some groups will have a change in their management as they reform to be in a better position to take their membership forward into the future. I hope that many of us will consider supporting Scouting in other ways, maybe not as section leaders but as a part of the District Team, maybe as part of the SAS or one of its sub SAS groups providing the right support at the right time that ensures Scouting is successful at all levels. A challenge is ahead for us all.

I hope we can all travel through whatever 2015 throws at us, the challenges in our own family life, work and Scouting. We can and we will be able to support each other through these journeys together as part of this special family called SCOUTING.

So I hope 2015 will be a great year that has more ups than downs, so let the magic of fun Scouting begin!

All the very best in 2015 from Polly

Blwyddwyn Newydd Dda. Happy New Year
