Triple Monopoly Win for Newport Explorers

They say things happen in threes, and that was certainly true this weekend.
Teams representing Newport’s three Explorer units (No Limits ESU, Tan Gwyllt ESU, and the District Young Leader unit) tackled the “TNT Monopoly Run” competition in London.
The event saw a total of 18 teams competing to visit each location on the classic Monopoly game board, including stations, water works, jail, free parking, and chance, in the fastest time. In a spin on other events, teams also have to find somewhere that represents each of the playing pieces, a house, hotel, and dice.  Teams have to photograph themselves in each location to prove they have been there.
To make it even more interesting, teams are also presented with a list of challenges, which saw them getting the public wearing Scout neckers, finding Police Officers, and looking after “squirrel eggs”.

The theme of threes continues with Newport teams picking up three of the prize places.  Tan Gwyllt ‘A’ Team won the competition overall by visiting 44 or 46 locations in a very respectable time of 7 hours 17 minutes.  “Lost Zebracorns” representing No Limits ESU scooped second place also visiting 44 locations in 10 hours 52 minutes.  Finally, Tan Gwyllt ‘C’ Team won the challenges category with a score of 615 points.
Tan Gwyllt ‘A’ Team also got a further mention for winning the best picture.  Young Leaders participating in the event were representing 25th Newport and 28th Newport.

The full results for Newport teams were:
Tan Gwyllt ‘A’ – 1st place (44 locations, 7hrs 17min)
Lost Zebracorns (No Limits ‘B’) – 2nd place (44 locations, 10hrs 52min)
Team Big Bang (No Limits ‘A’) – 5th place (36 locations, 7hrs 29min)
Rubiks Cube (25th Newport Young Leaders) – 14th place (17 locations, 12hrs 9min)
Tan Gwyllt ‘B’ and ‘C’ were accompanied by leaders so weren’t part of the competition, but visited 45 and 29 locations, in 12hrs 51min and 11hrs 22mins respectively.

In terms of challenge points, teams scored:
1st – Tan Gwyllt ‘C’ – 615
2nd – Rubiks Cube – 587
3rd – Tan Gwyllt ‘B’ – 514
13th – Lost Zebracorns – 191
15th – Team Big Bang – 102
18th – Tan Gwyllt ‘A’ – 81

The Explorer event will return around the same time next year, but there is also a Network/Leader event in September.
Both events are organised by TNT Network, which is a Scout Network for 18-25 year olds in Newport and the surrounding area.

A message from David (Polly) Pollard

NEWPORT DISTRICT SCOUTING - 2014 March

Hello Newport!

Firstly, let me say a big thank you to Lynda from all of the Newport Scouts for the support and work she has given to scouting in the District and to wish her well in her endeavours by returning to College to train as a teacher.

So why I am sending you this message and the answer is simply I have agreed to stand in as Acting DC for the time being until our new DC is in place and has gone through a settling in period.

Just when you thought it was safe to put on your ‘woggles’

I 'm back !

I plan to meet with the GSL’s / Group Managers and the District Team shortly so a plan can be put in place to ensure Newport Scouting is doing its best in supporting the young people of Newport and the adult leaders, helpers and supporters.

This plan is not down to one person but down to us all coming together and working together, which I know for a few it may be difficult at times – but the bottom line must be “what is best for the young people and scouting in our district”.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the near future.

Polly
