What is the Scout & Guide Post ?
Scout Post is a scheme that offers the community of
Newport and some parts of Monmouthshire an opportunity to send Christmas
Cards at a fraction of the cost of Royal Mail. It has been in operation for
20 years in Newport and was the 'brainchild' of a group in Roath Cardiff.
How the scheme works:-
Groups involved are given stamps to sell in the
area that they deliver to, this is not always the area that they do their
Scouting. Stamps are sold by Scouts & Guides, their parents and friends;
also at special volunteer retail outlets where cards are also posted. Stamps
go on sale in early November and during this period cards are collected from
the outlets and taken back to group headquarters for sorting into the other
areas of the scheme.
During the early part of December the cards for the other areas are brought
to a central sort centre for exchange, this is also done by the other areas
so at the end of the swap they come back with cards for their area to be
sorted into streets. This is done daily and after that they are delivered to
the households
At the very end of the campaign each scout or guide unit participating in
the scheme retains all but a small proportion of the stamp value.
Each stamp is sponsored and the money is used to pay for the printing of the
stamps and other disbursements. Both Girlguiding Newport and the Newport
Scout District also receive a certain amount for the administration of the
two associations in Newport.
