| Newport District Adventure Weekend 08
This weekend promised adventure and it didn't fail to deliver it! Early in May with the weather looking promising we gathered at Newport train station and loaded the coach. After an hour or so the bus finally arrived at the site and it was time to unload that mountain of bags and put them in the hall that was to be our home for the weekend. There was just time for a quick look around before our hot dog supper and bed - well for most of us! A slip meant one of us and two leaders had an un planed trip to the hospital!
Saturday morning started with cereal and full cooked breakfast, there were lots of bleary eyes around the table as most of us had only had a few hours sleep but we soon woke up when we found out our groups and the activities we were doing. My day started with a minibus trip to get to Oxwich bay. Here we were met by Dave (Our guide) who kitted us up with life jackets. Then it was time to walk down the beach, take off our shoes, roll up our trousers and wade out to the Sea Serpent, that defiantly woke me up!
Then we were off, speeding across the water at 25 knots, bumping up and down, getting sprayed with salty water, before long we slowed and were shown some of the local wildlife and beaches including a lot of different birds that Dave identified and told us about. We saw people surfing and climbing on the coast on the way to Worms Head.
A short time after we saw a seal and some cormorants - then we pulled up a lobster pot to meet some of the inhabitants of the deep during this little show and tell one of the boys caught a life jacket toggle and set off a life jacket!- so they do work!
We arrived back at the camp site had some lunch and set about the rest of our activities - we started with archery which was excellent, I even managed to hit a gold.
Next came the air rifle shooting this took a lot of concentration and a steady had, we were surprisingly good at this as I have not done it before - I cant wait to do it again.
Then came the assault course, it was really muddy and wet we had a couple of goes around then headed to the showers, we were that muddy we had to be hosed off first!
After tea and birthday cake, we had a fantastic camp fire followed by hot chocolate then off to be knackered.
On Sunday morning we had breakfast, packed up and played sports until the bus arrived to take us home.
A big thank you to ALL of the leaders on this camp that made it such a good weekend, and everyone there for making it so enjoyable.
A Special Thanks go to Gower Coast Adventures for their efforts in arranging the trips on the boat ..
