SCOUTING IN NEWPORT

Soap Box Derby 2007

The second annual scout soap box derby was held in October, on a bright dry but chilly day. - never mind lots of pushing was in order to power the carts around the course.

The event was entered in teams of up to five scouts with one drive and two pushers at one time.

This year had a total of nine teams battling it out along the challenging courses, in a wide verity of different scout powered carts.

The races the teams compete in are:

first past the post sprint

5 lap relay race

5 half lap slalom race

4 minute endurance race.

All teams run each of the races (except the endurance race)  twice to establish the exact positions.

After a lot of sweating, a few crashes and two broken carts the events were over and the points were tallied.

The end of the event saw 45 very tired scouts all smiling having had a truly enjoyable afternoon competing in one of scouting more traditional events. WELL DONE.

Thanks go to all those adults and leaders that sent time organising, running and cart building to make this event a success, a job well done!
