St Georges Day
St Georges day 2006 saw Newport District out on parade to mark the day dedicated to the patron saint of scouting (and England!).
The day provides an opportunity for the whole district to mass as one and show off how strong scouting continues to be in the city of Newport.
The parade started with a march to the church through the City centre along streets lined with parents and onlookers drawn by the spectacle of Newport's scouting youth proudly and smartly showing their dedication to the scouting movement.
This year the district standard representing the sections as well as the Union Flag, Welsh Dragon and the St Georges Cross were carried by members that are to attend the 2007 world jamboree.
Along the rout the salute was taken by Newport's Mayor who joined us for the parade and judged the toilet paper mummy competition!.
Once in the church, the service was lead by the District Chaplain Rev. D Parfitt with readings and activities by youth members.
As part of the service, all members renewed there membership of the movement by repeating there promises.
Following the service the District made its way back to the civic centre lead by the 1st Rogerstone Scout Band, Newport's last remaining Scout band, supported by the Abergavenny Air Cadet Band (2478.
Before the parade was dismissed the District Commissioner thanked all those in attendance and presented one of Newport's many leaders a long service award. There are a large number of photographs of the parade, a gallery of them will appear here soon!
