Newport District Scouts

Cooking Competition

Held at:    HQ of 1^st Wentwood Scout Group

On:    Saturday 25^th March 2006

This year the cooking competition was hotly contested by six teams of Scouts representing five Scout troops from Newport District.

The teams were set the task of cooking a three course meal to a menu set by their leaders and were asked not only to prepare and cook it but also to present it for judging by the special guest judge Colin Strong, the chef at The Rock and Fountain Inn, Penhow.

STARTER   

Tagliatelle with Bacon, Mushrooms and Peas.

Main Course

Quick Beef Stroganoff

Desert

Each team prepared a Desert of their choice.

As the aroma of cooking drifted through the building (along with the odd waft of something being cooked to the point of no return) the judge mingled with the contestants and judged the teams on Hygiene and Safety, Preparation and cooking of the food, Presentation, Table presentation  and Serving the meal at the specified time.

After three hours of hard work and careful preparation the teams waited anxiously for the judge to taste their offerings and award marks for the dishes they had served

The Scout Troops that took part were:

1^st Caerleon Scout Troop

1^st Llanmartin Scout Troop   

1^st Wentwood Scout Troop (incorporating 29^th Newport (Sea) Scout Troop)

25^th Newport (Air) Scout Troop

25^th Newport (Sea) Scout Troop

This years winners were:

1^st Wentwood Scout Troop

2^nd Place – 1^st Caerleon  3^rd place – 1^st Llanmartin

Runners up – 25^th Newport (Air), 25^th Newport (Sea) “1”, 25^th Newport (Sea) “A”

At the end of the event all the Scouts that had taken part received

individual prizes with the winning team receiving them from the special

 guest judge Colin Strong.

After the prizes had been awarded Colin was presented with a small memento of the day by Glynn Bailey (ADC Scouts) to thank him for the time he had spent judging the competition and for tasting all the dishes that had been prepared.
