NEWPORT SCOUTS CLIMB TO NEW HEIGHTS AND DESCEND TO NEW DEPTHS! During early January 2006 Scouts from several of Newport’s troops are making the most of the opportunity of a full day at the Welsh International Climbing Centre, climbing and pot-holing. So early on Saturday morning we gather at the city’s bus station where the adventure started. We climbed on the coach which delivered us to the front door of the climbing centre.
Once booked in we went to our room to be briefed and change into climbing and pot-holing gear. Divided into three groups off we went, One group to the climbing walls the second group to the high wire course and the third to the pot-hole, where we were warned it was a little(?) damp! At the climbing area the Scouts were all issued with safety kit. After a short battle to put it on, and have it checked the activities began. Under the instruction of the centre staff one group took to the specially reserved climbing wall. The second group took to the high rope course starting with a breathtaking climb up a wire Caving ladder.
All the scouts, some of whom had not been climbing before had a good try at doing an activity which frightens the pants off many an adult (Polly didn’t go near a wall but still had a helmet on to look the part!). Some of the scouts turned in human fly’s taking to climbing like a wasp to a glass pop. Lunch and a time to speak and inform others of the great personal challenges they had experienced during the early part of the day. Pm and time to continue with the adventure! Pot-holing and again something new for most of the scouts! Yes they changed in pot-holing clothing and footwear not forgetting the hard hat with lamp. Watching the scouts walking towards the entrance to the pot-hole it could have been a scene from the days of active coal mining?
All too soon and its time to get back on the coach and return home to Newport. Thank you all who made the adventure possible.
