Gower Adventure Weekend.
This weekend promised adventure and it didn't fail to deliver it! Early in October with the weather looking a bit on the rough side we gathered at Newport train station (not bus station sorry to those that had a really good start at the wrong place!) to meet our coach for the start of the adventure. There was a bit of a delay whist several tonnes of luggage were lovingly packed into the tiny space under the bus!
After an hour or so the bus finally arrived at the site and it was time to unload that mountain of bags and put them in the hall that was to be our home for the weekend. There was just time for a quick wide game before our hot dog supper and bed.
Saturday morning started with cereal and full cooked
breakfast, there were lots of bleary eyes around the table as most of us
had only had a few hours sleep but we soon woke up when we found out our
groups and the activities we were doing. My day started with a minibus trip to get to Oxwich
bay. Here we were met by Dave (Our guide) who kitted us up with life
jackets. Then it was time to walk down the beach, take off our shoes,
roll up our trousers and wade out to the Sea Serpent, that defiantly
woke me up! Then we were off, speeding across the water at 25 knots, bumping up and down, getting sprayed with salty water, before long we slowed and were shown some of the local wildlife and beaches including a lone goat, a lot of different birds that Dave identified and told us about. We saw people surfing and climbing in three cliffs bay.
Then it was time to go again, we quickly picked up speed until someone lost a hat overbored and we had a chance to practise our hat overbored drill! A short time after we saw a seal and some cormorants - then it was time to head back in and wade off the boat to the beach, this time the water was a bit deeper and one of the boys fell over and set off his life jacket!- so they do work!
We arrived back at the camp site had some lunch and set about the rest of our activities - we started with archery which was excellent, I even managed to hit a gold.
Next came the climbing tower and abseiling - this was
really hard work and it took me a while to get up. Once I was up there I
then had to get down, abseiling was the way, I was scared at the top but
it was really good fun once I was over the edge!- I cant wait to do it
again. Then came the assault course, it was really muddy and wet we had a couple of goes around then headed to the showers, we were that muddy we had to be hosed off first!
After tea and birthday cake, we watched a film and had the shortest camp fire I have ever been too, but we were all knackered and glad to go to bed. On Sunday morning we had breakfast, packed up and played potted sports until the bus arrived to take us home.
A big thank you to ALL of the leaders on this camp that made it such a good weekend, and everyone there for making it so enjoyable.
A Special Thanks go to Gower Coast Adventures for their efforts in rearranging the trip due to the bad weather on the day.
