First Aid Training
The Newport Scout &
Guide 1st Aid Team has been operating within the Scout District and
the Girlguiding Division of Newport for the last 30 years; providing training
to for Scout & Guide leaders.

2011
First Aid Courses
For many years the
team principally taught the HSE First Aid at Work, being a qualification
recognised nationally and with add-ons proved successful as an additional
qualification for ones CV. Recently the structure of the course has altered
and the team has decided not offer the course which even to re-qualify needed
to be spread over two week-ends. The team trainers are all registered St
Johns in Wales trainers and they also offer the First Response and various
levels of the Scout Emergency Aid Badge.
The demands on the
time of the Scout & Girlguiding Leaders is
increasing with the extra training requirements needed in this modern world
and so we have taken the opportunity to change one of our courses.
The British Red
Cross have a Practical First Aid Certificate, which has been introduced in a
partnership between Scouting & Girlguiding and British Red Cross.
The course is a
more in depth 1st Aid training than the 1st Response and
it can be taught over one week-end, it being a 14 hour contact course and on
the second day, where possible there is outdoor practical training.
Red Cross
Practical First Aid Certificate
The Scout
Association in Partnership with the Red Cross has allowed Scout trainers teach
the Red Cross Practical First Aid Certificate. This is a two-day First Aid
qualification is recognised outside of Scouting. The course is a minimum of 14

Initial Response (arriving at and managing an incident).

children.
- Shock.

unconsciousness.

First Response
Courses
This course is the
minimum level of 1st Aid that all leaders in both the Scout
Association and Girlguiding (UK) demand for any leader who holds an
appointment in either association.
Any duly qualified
trainer can run courses and we run these courses in the main training centre
and we are able to put in extra courses on demand.
This course is a
minimum of 6-hour contact course and is a basic course as a first responder to
an accident.

Extract from 1st Response
Working Group:
1st Response is a training package designed to help leaders within The
Guide Association and The Scout Association build up their confidence and
skills to cope should an incident occur. Knowing what to do and what your
limitations are is important as incidents can happen at any time - at a
unit meeting, out-of-doors, on a residential event etc. You may be the
first person to arrive at the scene of an emergency and you will need to
take control of a situation until somebody more experienced can take over
from you. This includes dealing with the first aid emergency as well as
coping with other people and dangerous situations. |
Emergency Aid
Badge Scheme
The Scout
Association in Partnership with the Red Cross have developed the "Emergency
Aid" Staged Activity badge scheme for Young People to be trained within.
The basic premise
is that the staged badge scheme follows the ability of the young people as
they progress through scouting.
-
Emergency Aid 1 is aimed at
Beavers (1-2 hrs)
-
Emergency Aid 2 is aimed at
Cubs (2-3 hrs)
-
Emergency Aid 3 is aimed at
Scouts (4-5 hrs)
-
Emergency Aid 4 (8 hrs)
-
Emergency Aid 5 (16 hrs)
Whist these staged badges are aimed at
sections to provide progression all stages are available thought the age
groups.

The Emergency Aid
4 badge exceeds the requirements of the First Response course.
The requirements for the trainer experience and qualification increase with
each stage.
