The 28th Newport participated in the
Croesyceiliog Canoe Club, Usk Tidal River Race on Sunday 11th September.The race is held from Newbridge on Usk and finishes at the Hanbury Arms,
Caerleon, a total of just over ten kilometres.A total of five scouts and explorers entered the race, along with two
leaders, There were a total of fifty entries from all over the country.There are quite a few categories which can be entered. G. was
fastest over 18, under four metre boat class with a time of one hour 2 minutes 13 seconds .
There is a trophy for the fastest scout, which was won by A. of the 28th Newport in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes 31 seconds.
L. of the 28th won the the fastest ladies under 18, under four metre boat in a time of 1 hour 19 minutes (which was faster than all of the female over 18 paddlers).
S. and J. came third out of eight in the C2 class (Canadian Canoe) in a time of 1 hour 13 minutes 24 seconds.
A healthy competition has developed with the scouts and each has vowed to win the trophy next year. More entries from the scout movement are encouraged for next year.
