Chepstow Hike

On the weekend of the 23rd of July; 8 Scouts, 1 Explorer, 1 Helper and a Leader went for a 2-day hike covering 20Km, form Monmouth Bridge to Larkfield roundabout, Chepstow. 5 of the scouts were walking to obtain badges and had to be self-sufficient, carrying all we needed on our backs, The remaining 3 scouts were travelling light with just day sacks. (The lucky things).

THE BEGINNING

We started off at 9:50 am all in a good mood and me navigation, (Im good at it but I had never done the 1st leg so I was a bit worried). We made the 1st checkpoint 5 minuets faster than our leader thought we would! It was easy none of us were aching, but boy would we regret saying that. We started the second leg with no trouble, until the boys decided they would be annoying and repeat the same question over and over again. (Reminder to all girls when you go to camp and youre the only girl thats going take something to listen to, apart from the boys)

When the end of the 2nd leg came we were sooooooooo happy we were worn out. Our shoulders hurt the most and the boys were apparently starving.

I hated the next leg not only was it the longest leg of the day, but the boys were annoying again. Well I say boys but I mean 1 boy in particular, O you know who I mean!

The last leg was the shortest leg, and the most embarrassing but the most fun at the same time. We went past a little play park for children up to the age of 5, and the boys played on it. Well they do have the mental age of 4 year olds!

The only bad thing on the last leg was that the second group cheated, when (LM) took a short cut and missed climbing up a hill to the campsite.

WHAT A WAY TO END THE DAY

After a hard days walk we had to put our tent up and we had to cook our own tea, while the other 3are living in the lap of luxury with there food cooked for them. I made my tea, noodles and pesto and it got eaten, not by me but by G & T, I like pesto as well.

There was only one easy part of the weekend, SLEEPING. I was fast asleep in minuets until the rain started, only one of our zips on the outside shut so when it rained my rucksack got a bit wet, and we also had a hole in our tent.

DAY 2 (What theres 2 days of torture!!)

The next day the ground was soaking and it was raining..Still. Because it was raining none of us wanted to make breakfast, so we nicked a piece of bread

WE LOST SOME?

We lost 2 Scouts and an Explorer that day, no they didnt die, O and S went home because O was ill, and L went to do Archery. So we walked through in the rain with the rest of the other group joining us. The 1st leg on this day was the longest leg we did, and it took longer because there were hills and it was wet. And it was still raining.

When we got to the only check point I was soooooooooooooooooooooooo worn out and then skip said its only over that hill and I thought to myself, how many times have I heard that and it has been 4 times further.

The last few miles felt like they took 10 years to do (ok maybe Im exaggerating a little. Ok a lot).

When we got to the end I was worn out, I was wet, cold, tired, aching, do you want me to carry on? Ok I wont because I think you get the picture. But all together I had a really good experience and I lost weight.
