STA Prince William

Two Explorer Scouts of the Dinas Casnewydd Explorer Scout Unit (Caerleon), Rhys M and Andrew E, have managed to gain a 'FIRST' as they are the first Explorer Scouts from Newport, Gwent and Wales to take part in a 10 day 'Tall Ships Experience'.

Their voyage will be aboard a 60 metre square-rigged sail training vessel, the 'PRINCE WILLIAM' which will take them from Barbados along the unspoilt windward islands of Bequia, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada, where the boys say they're promised idyllic sandy beaches, natural coves, coral cays and of course that real Caribbean hospitality along the way.

Not a holiday though, the Tall Ships Youth Trust Voyage will help to raise the level of achievement in four main Lifelong Learning areas for the two Explorer Scouts that will enrich their lives forever:
· Acquiring new skills, knowledge, understanding; making use of information and understanding.
· Learning, problem solving; communicating ideas and information; evaluating achievements.
· Increased self-awareness, self-confidence and a sense of empowerment; ability to make choices and influence; ability to discuss and debate.
· Taking responsibility for self and others; understanding the role and value of leadership; forming positive relationships with supporting adults and peers.

But like Rhys and Andrew said, "we have been doing these thing in Scouting for years, so let's have a go and see if we got it right".

Along with the voyage, due to transport problems with the planes, they have both had to go a day early, and will have to stay on in Barbados for an extra two day. This has not caused any problems though as the boys are being hosted for the extra time by fellow Scouts from Barbados.

Message from the intrepid 2 – “can’t wait to do it again”

The draft sailing programme for 2007 / 8 is now available. Voyages are available for both boys and girls of 16 years of age minimum; some adult voyages are also available. Any interested Explorer Scouts, Network Scouts or Leaders may obtain detail of voyages, advise on funding etc from Mac Pearce of the Scout Fellowship Email Mac
