Saturday at the Newport Wetlands and it was a lovely day at last !

Around 250 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Leaders, Family and friends turned out for the Jamboree on the Trail which was once again organised by the Scout Active Support Section. This years event attracted more walkers than last year and the organisers were pleased with the support supplied by all the volunteers who marshalled the event.

I am sorry to have to tell you all that Raymond Henry Lynch a founder member of the 29th Newport Sea Scouts passed away earlier this evening (Wednesday).

The funeral for Ray will be held on Tuesday 15th May

12 o'clock at Tovey Brothers followed by the crematorium

and then onto Greenmeadow Golf Club.

Congratulations - Devizes Westminster International Canoe Marathon

Huge congratulations go out to Stephen Ford and Nick Spear for completing The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon, both have long connections with the 24th Group and Newport Scouting.

The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon is one of the world’s great endurance events and a typically British creation that takes place every Easter.

The pair paddled for 4 days completing the whole 125 miles, a fantastic achievement.

The 125-mile course places the highest demands on individuals, boats and support crews and has been running since 1948

Beavers Go An Egg Hunting 2012.

Saturday 24^th March, on one of the finest days this year almost 70 beavers from amongst 5 district colonies took part in this year’s annual Easter Egg Hunting event.

Once again it was held in the grounds of Tredegar House, firstly the beavers took part in a comic relief style mile walk, and this encompassed walking the grounds looking for various wildlife signs.

Using a parachute and hoops then got the beavers playing games with members from among the different colonies.

Finally a mass line up was made before the grand count down to the egg hunting began (well actually looking for beaver motif cut outs hanging amongst the trees); each beaver had to find at least one cut out.

With all the cut outs collected each person was rewarded with a Smarties chocolate egg before leaving for home.

Many thanks to all who took part, and thoseleaders who helped make this another brilliant district beaver event, hope to see you all again next year.

1ST ROGERSTONE SCOUT BAND COMES TO MALPAS !

We will be running a trial practice session at the 25th Newport Scout Hut (Malpas) next Wednesday (21/03/12) at 7:15pm. Practice will last for an hour and will give members the opportunity to have a go at our drum, bugle, symbol and glokenspiel sections.

No musical knowledge is neccessary.

We would encourage all members of scouting from different groups across Newport to come join the fun and give it a go.

Our aim is to increase the number of young people involved with Wales' last official Scout Band, and we hope to do this by running alternative practices at our HQ in Rogerstone, and the Scout hut in Malpas.

London Zoo Sleep Over - 1st Bassaleg Cubs

This weekend 1st Bassaleg Cubs made a train journey to London Zoo for a sleepover.

The Cubs took a diversion to the new Olympic site for lunch and then made their way to Pizza Hut for tea. After having their tea they then took a trek from Baker Street to London Zoo. After setting down their bags in the bug house in which they will be sleeping in later, they had a torchlight tour of the zoo, this allowed the cubs to see many nocturnal animals, including the patrolling lions! Then the cubs returned to the bug house.

The cubs crept into their sleeping bags for a bedtime story which was read by a zoo keeper, later on that night just before getting to sleep, the cubs noticed an infestation of cockroaches! The cubs immediately formed a cockroach squad! which started an operation to transport the cockroaches outside, unfortunately there were too many cockroaches and the cubs exhausted themselves.

Everyone slept like logs! In the morning the lights turned on at 6.30AM, the cubs had to roll up their sleeping bags and mats and pack away all their stuff before departing to the cafe for their breakfast. After the cubs had their fill they had a morning tour of the Zoo, in which they saw the otters and the penguins, they also had the experience of the rain forest room, where they saw tamarinds and birds without barriers!

We had to depart the zoo before it opened so we soon made our way to the British museum for a glimpse of early Egyptian life and to see the Mummies, then we headed to McDonalds for lunch and then on to Paddington to catch our train home.

The 25th Air Scouts - RAF Inspection

On Thursday the 25th Air Scouts had their Royal Air Force Inspection. This is the 30th year of the Troop being continuously recognised by the RAF. This is an excellent achievement to be able to maintain such a high standard demanded by the RAF for this length of time, most of which the Troop has been under the leadership of David "Polly" Pollard.

There are a number of Air Scout Troops around the UK but only a few are able to qualify for this recognition.

A very well done to the Scouts and Leaders

Our new DC Lynda was in attendance and was impressed with the turn out and the way the scouts behaved. They were all a credit to themselves, the troop and their parents.

New District Commissioner - Feb 2012

New District Commissioner

Firstly: A huge ‘Thank You’ must go to Rees Preston who stepped in to look after the District until a new District Commissioner could be appointed.

Rees is moving away for a while but I am assured he will keep his contacts with Wales, Gwent and Scouting so I would like to take this opportunity to wish him the very best in all he undertakes in the future.

I am sure most of you know me but in case there are some who don’t;

I have been involved within Newport (based at Caerleon) for the past 12 years and about 3 years ago I took on the role of ADC Cub Scouts.

22nd (Christchurch) scouts, in their scout HQ held a rock music weekend, where the scouts learnt how to set up a band, played musical instruments and wired up microphones to a recoding suite, which allowed them to take home a recording of their performances.

Jamboree on the Trail (JOTT 2012)

Jamboree On The Trail is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to hike together. All Scouts, whatever their age and wherever they may be in the world, are invited to participate in whatever way they can.

24th Cub Pack - Africa Project

Mary's Meals Backpack Project for Africa

The 24th. Cub Pack collected and supplied 24 backpacks plus 1 large box full of school equipment, books, pens, pencils etc. as well as a ball, clothes, sandles and washing kit.

Mary's Meal supply a meal for each child cooked by people of the village at the school. The backpacks provide each child with clothes and stationery for their class work.

Fire Safety Course

A large number of the scouts from across Newport are taking part in a Fire Safety Course run by the Fire Service at Malpas

Its a mix of hands on learning supported by presentation in the classroom. The "Hands on" involves looking at what the different rescue and firefigting vehicles are designed for – railway, car crashes, house fires and even firefighting and rescue on the water.

The Fire Crews demonstrated how to rescue a horse and on a very wet and cold night the bit we all saw how to put out fire.

Due to the oversubscription of scouts attending only two had the opportunity to dress as a fire fighters and use the equipment to put a fire out.

Great night of active fun scouts and more to follow. Thanks to the watches at Malpas Fire Station for their presentation.

Beaver Junk Modelling

On Saturday 21st January 20 beavers from three groups congregated at Caerleon HQ.
All came armed with bags of junk suitable for a junk modelling experience.

The theme for the day was Chinese dragons to celebrate the Chinese New Year which falls on 23rd January.
After each group showing us all how they open their meetings, the bags were emptied and the fun began.

Dragons of all shapes and sizes began to emerge from the junk.
The morning ended with a drink and refreshments kindy provided by the Caerleon Beaver leaders.

Fun and Friendship had by all

FIRST AID TRAINIG DATES AND APPLICATION FORM

NEWPORT SCOUT AND GUIDE FIRST AID TRAINING 2012/2013

The British Red Cross Practical First Aid Certificate is the recommended qualification for Leaders and Helpers taking members into the outdoor environment.

The course is recognised by both the Scout Association and Girlguiding UK and operated in conjunction with the British Red Cross.

The course is a 14 hour contact course, run over one weekend.

The certificate is valid for 3 years and is recognised outside Scouting and Girlguiding, it offers a more in depth knowledge than the 1^stResponse Course for those planning activities “outside”.

Elements relevant to the outdoors are included on this course. There will be outdoor work on the Sunday

Application for this new course must be at least 14 days before the course date to allow for registration

There will be a minimum number of 6 candidates for all courses.

Minimum age for all first aid qualifications is 14 years.

PRACTICAL FIRST AID CERTIFICATE (British Red Cross): cost £10 to be held at 1^stCaerleon Scout Hut

28th/29th January 2012: start time 0930……………................application by 13^th January 2012.

9th/10th June 2012: start time 0930………………………..........application by 25^th May 2012.

6th/7th October 2012: start time 0930 ...................................application by 21^st September 2012.

26th/27th January 2013: start time 0930.................……..…....application by 11^th January 2013.

First Response (Scout Assn & Girlguiding UK, 6 hr course): cost £3 at Skip Jennings Hall

First Response is the minimum requirement for warrant approval and renewal, however the Scout Association and Girlguiding UK recommend a higher level of training if going outdoors.
