24th Cub Pack - Africa Project

Mary's Meals Backpack Project for Africa

The 24th. Cub Pack collected and supplied 24 backpacks plus 1 large box full of school equipment, books, pens, pencils etc. as well as a ball, clothes, sandles and washing kit.

Mary's Meal supply a meal for each child cooked by people of the village at the school. The backpacks provide each child with clothes and stationery for their class work.

Fire Safety Course

A large number of the scouts from across Newport aretaking part in a Fire Safety Course run by the Fire Service at Malpas

Its a mix of hands on learning supportedby presentation in the classroom. The "Handson" involves looking at what the different rescue and firefigting vehicles are designed for – railway, car crashes,house fires and even firefighting and rescue on the water.

The Fire Crews demonstrated how to rescue a horse andon a very wet and cold night the bit we all saw how to put out fire.

Due to the oversubscription of scouts attending only two had the opportunity to dress as a fire fighters anduse the equipment to put a fire out.

Great night of active fun scouts and more tofollow. Thanks to the watches at Malpas Fire Station for their presentation.

Beaver Junk Modelling

On Saturday 21st January 20 beavers from three groups congregated at Caerleon HQ.
All came armed with bags of junk suitable for a junk modelling experience.

The theme for the day was Chinese dragons to celebrate the Chinese New Year which falls on 23rd January.
After each group showing us all how they open their meetings, the bags were emptied and the fun began.

Dragons of all shapes and sizes began to emerge from the junk.
The morning ended with a drink and refreshments kindy provided by the Caerleon Beaver leaders.

NEWPORT SCOUT AND GUIDE FIRSTAID TRAINING 2012/2013

The British Red CrossPractical First Aid Certificate is the recommended qualification for Leadersand Helpers taking members into the outdoor environment.

The course is recognisedby both the Scout Association and Girlguiding UK and operated inconjunction with the British Red Cross.

Thecourse is a 14 hour contact course, run over one weekend.

Thecertificate is valid for 3 years and is recognised outside Scouting andGirlguiding, it offers a more in depth knowledge than the 1^stResponse Course for those planning activities “outside”.

Elements relevant to the outdoors are included onthis course. There will be outdoor work on the Sunday

Applicationfor this new course must be at least 14 days before the course date to allowfor registration

Therewill be a minimum number of 6 candidates for all courses.

Minimumage for all first aid qualifications is 14 years.

Sad News

It is with sadness we announce the death on Saturday of Ramon O’Brien (OBA)
who was a former GSL of 1st Rogerstone and their Bandmaster.

Ray had been a member of the movement for more than 70 years and had a long association with the former Newport Scout Band. He was an active supporter and advisor of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Funeral service to be held on Friday 20th January

Service at Newport City Cathedral, St Woolas at 15:00 followed by cremation at Gwent Crematorium

PORTCULLIS JAMBOREE 25TH TO 27TH MAY 2012

A ‘Jamboree’ style camp open to all Sections in each District within Gwent Area Scouts

at Vauxhall Fields, Monmouth.

The main activities we are arranging include:-

Shooting & Archery • Canoeing • Climbing Wall • Abseiling • Inflatable Assault Course • Bucking Bull • Water Bungee Run • Crate Stacking • Quad Biking • Fishing • Raft Building • Radios • Spider Mountain • Backwoods Cooking • Zorbing •Assault course • and more .....

Activities will be divided into zones with the following themes:- Water / Scoutcraft / Olympic

Groups are asked if they could provide some activities. There is already the likelihood of space hopper football, tag rugby, slalom hockey, welly throwing, shot putt/discus, hop, skip and jump. Please indicate on the booking form any activities your group could provide. A designated area will be provided for the activities.

There will be an Olympic type competition for some of the activities and medals awarded on the Sunday.

    The costs will be £15 per Cub, Scout and Explorer Scout.
    Beavers arrive on Saturday and will be able to camp on the Saturday night their cost will be £10.
    All Leaders/helpers and day visitors £5.

A Deposit of £10 to be paid by all Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts

by 31st January 2012 to guarantee a place.

    Leaders/helpers will need to pay the £5 in full by the 31st January.
    Explorers helping as young leaders will pay £5 but will not be able to take part in activities.
    Different coloured arm bands will be issued for young people and leaders/helpers.

It is essential for groups to keep to the 31st January deadline to enable activities/toilets

to be booked and deposits paid.

The balance of £5 to be paid one week prior to the Jamboree. Groups will need to add their own costs for food, transport etc.

Cheques to be made payable to Gwent Area Scouts and returned with booking form to the district nominated person named on the form. The deposits will be non refundable. All participants will be given a camp badge.

Groups are reminded that it is essential that all Adults are CRB checked prior to the camp.

Each Group will bring their own equipment, food including marquees. The site will be available from Wednesday 23rd May for erection of equipment and must be removed by Tuesday evening 29th.

It will be a requirement that someone from each group stays on site as long as they have equipment there.

Alternative accommodation will be provided in the event of bad weather for younger campers.

The theme of the camp will be the Olympics. The official Olympic torch will leave Monmouth on 25th the same day as it start of its journey around Wales. We are hoping to have our own Olympic torch on site for the duration of the Camp.

Each group will be allocated a country to represent and are requested to dress up on the Saturday evening in the country allocated and there will be a procession around the fields. A camp fire and band will follow for the remaining evening entertainment.

Remembrance Sunday Parade

On the hottest Remembrance parade [ever] some 152Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Leaders and supporters from across the City took part inthe Parade, all very smarty turned out and all a credit to their groups and toNewport District.

Before the service and parade the Air Scouts handed out the paradeorder of service to the public and those on parade. During the service everyonegave their all to ensure the service was meaningful and all taking someimportant emotions and memories home with them.

Becauseof the heat on parade a small number of our scouts became unwell and neededextra support in the form of First Aid! We all trust they are now all feelbetter.

Thank you to everyone who took part in parades all across our District

Welldone everyone, keep up the quality scouting we are known for!

Rememberance Day 2011

First Aid - Scouts Training Course

On a dry and sunny Saturday in November, 30scouts and leaders meet outside the 1^st Caerleon HQ. Where is Dennis ? Sorry there he is, wewent off quickly, getting down to becoming First Aiders. This is a full day ofaction with lots of new skills to be learnt and to improve on some we might havenot used for some time?

With this First Aid knowledge it is nice toknow that our scouts may be able to save a life in the event of an accident.Wepracticed CPR, bandage work and saw some horrible slides of accidents, it putsus off lunch!

After lunch more skills are taught and achance to bandage your mate to make him look like a mummy from the Pyamids of Egypt!

By the end of the day we could all bandage,treat people for fainting [which came invery useful on Remembrance parade].

Great fun, great Scouting.

Soap Box Derby

Newport's scout section were out in October competing in a "traditional" soap box Derby and attracting coach loads of spectators who found us more entertaining than the roman remains!

A glorious day resulting in five teams enrolling their home made soap box racing carts for a hard morning of pushing and driving in a series of gruelling races including sprints, relays, obstacle course to test steering and a Le Mans style "4 min" endurance race.

After all the points were totalled a very happy and tired team from 1st Marshfield claimed victory.

Congratulations to all who took part in another great Scouting event.

Newport District Beaver visit Ezzeeplay

On Friday 14^th October, Beaversfrom Newport District attended Ezzeeplay.

Forty five Beavers from four coloniesarrived at 6pm.

Refreshments of squashhad been provided which was very welcome

Lots of fun and bouncing took place until7pm when they were collected by their parents.

All left sweaty and tired.

Charles (Skip) was founder and President of the Newport Gang show
and had a long association with the 22nd Newport Group, being their
retired Group Scout Leader.

Here is a more convenient way to order your badges and it will help savesome of your fuel, as there will only be a need to visit me once, to pay andcollect your orders, once I let you know when they will be ready (it willstill be on a Thursday evening 19:30hrs until 21:00hrs). So all you have todo is to complete the form with your required badge order and send it to mevia the Newport District website, I will do the rest.If you feel that you would like to take part in the social side of thingsand having a chat with others within the District, you'd be more thanwelcome just by calling in to SJH on a Thursday evening, where you can stillput your order in and possibly collect it as has been done within theDistrict for many years.Either way, I look forward to receiving your badge orders and serving youwith your badge requirements.

THE OLDEST FETE IN MALPAS

On a rainthreaten Saturday in September the 25^th held Malpas oldest fete. Theday starts nice and early, the team of supporters start to turn up and the areais transformed from a quiet area of Newport into theblast that makes a scout fete special.

Made up of‘white elephant ‘, glass ware, toys books, DVD’s, bottles, hot dogs,light refreshment, coconuts, fishing, games of skill and luck, plus a tinsstore. There was something for all the family. At 14:00 we openedthe fete to the good people of Malpas , many old supporters waiting for thedoors to open and the fun to begin.

The afternoon progresses with coconuts wonand hotdogs eaten. It’s not as busy as most years, the much awaited raffletakes place with many winning the top quality prizes all of which have been donated by the parents and residents of Malpas. We would like to thank Malpas Unionist Cluband Domino Pizzas for their very generous donations.

Now the teamturns its efforts to return the Church and Scout halls back to normal and thearea returns to the quiet setting that is Llanover Close.

Anothersuccessful fete so a very BIG THANK YOU to everyone who worked so hard beforeand during the day. Thanks from all the Committee and unformed adults, we can’tdo it with you.

2011 Talybont Trial mountain challenge walk

On the 8th October the 'Newport Outdoor Group' with the assistance of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, Will be holding the 2011 Talybont Trial mountain challenge walk. There is an option of a 20 mile walk (over 18's only) or 10 miles.

This event would be an excellent test of Navigation skills and most definitely stamina on the 20 miler for the more senior Scouts, Explorers or someone doing their DOE.

Royal Gwent Hospital Fun Run

Well done to the 25^th Air scoutsfor supporting the RGH Fun run. Again the lads gave their time to supportthe run by putting up the tent and marshalling the route during the run andkeeping everyone in touch with skilful radio communication. Also thanks to Andrew from the 1st Rogerstone for his help.
