Mayor and Mayoress of Newport Allan & Jane Morris
presenting first aid certificates to members of Newport District
Scouts following the completion of their training course.

The training was provided by professional instructor and first
Caerleon Scouts leader Denis with assistance of other district Scout
leaders. The scouts were taught how to cope in many emergency
situations and their training included resuscitation and the treatment
of broken bones and bleeding.

When presenting the certificates the Mayor praised the work and
commitment of the scout leaders and the huge contribution they make to
providing activities that bring out the very best in our youngsters.
He
also said that as a former fire officer he appreciated more than most
the importance of being able to provide first aid to people in
difficulties. It is a skill that is never forgotten and could one day
save the life of a complete stranger purely by being in the right
place at the right time and possessing the right skills to save a
life. As always these young scouts will ''Be prepared''
Also in the photograph is the new James Davies memorial shield
presented for the first time to 1st Caerleon Scouts this years winners
of the Newport Scouts soap box Derby. The shield is a tribute to the
work and commitment to the scout movement of James Davies who died
recently following a brave battle against a long illness.

In the presence of his widow sons the mayor gave an emotional and
heart warming tribute to the work and character of James Davies who
was an old school friend of his.
